Underdog, or Maybe Not?

Super Bowl 52 was Sunday and the Philadelphia Eagles won their title since 1960. It wasn’t even called the Super Bowl back then when the Eagles won their last NFL title.

The media has tried to portray this as a huge upset because all of the Las Vegas sports books had the Eagles as the underdog. If you watched the Eagles all season you would know that this probably wasn’t that big of an upset. They had the better offensive line, better defense and in my opinion better offensive weapons outside of Rob Gronkowski who I consider to be the tight end of all time.

The talk before the game was can Nick Foles not blow the game, is the moment too big for him, can he be clutch against the greatest accomplishment quarterback of all time? He answered yes is a resounding fashion. He didn’t just outplay Tom Brady who had 505 yards and 3 touchdowns. But he played just as great at him by 28/43 for 373 yards and 3 touchdowns with one interception. Here’s the catch, he also caught a touchdown pass on 4th and Goal from the 1 yard line just before halftime to go up by 10 going into the break. Foles showed that he could be a starting quarterback if given the right system and someone that believes in him.

Doug Pederson will and should get a lot of credit for calling the game the way he did. He was aggressive the whole entire game. When he figured out that the Patriots defense couldn’t stop them he kept his foot on the gas and showed why he’s been getting credit all season for his play calling. The aggressiveness really showed on the before mentioned 4th and 1 from the one yard with a 3 point lead. Most coaches would be conservative and just kick the field goal and go up 6. Pederson knew that Tom Brady was getting the ball back after halftime so he decided to pull one of the greatest calls in the history of the super bowl out of his hat. This play will always be remembered as a gutsy and wonderful call that probably won them the super bowl. Pederson showed that he wasn’t scared of Bill Belichick and the Patriots mystique, he was here to beat the Patriots this night.

In a Super Bowl with so many story lines, people seek to forget about the important players and coaches. The Eagles won the Super Bowl, let’s not talk about the losers as much.

Thanks.
