2017 Warriors vs. 2001 Lakers?

The Golden State Warriors as currently assembled are probably the best team in NBA history. They have the most likely the two best shooters in NBA history in Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson. They have a great defender in Draymond Green that can guard anyone on the court basically, not to mention Green makes plays for the Warriors on offense and is a great leader for them. Then they have Kevin Durant who’s easily the best scorer in NBA this generation. He’s seven feet tall and can handle the rock with such grace you wouldn’t think he’s actually 7 feet. They have a do it all player in Andre Iguodala who does everything for the team. A lot of people are saying this team will beat any team in a 7 game series. I’m here to dispute that claim.

The 2000-2001 Los Angeles Lakers were an all time great team. They featured Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal and a perfect cast of role players around them. They ran the triangle offense perfectly taught by Phil Jackson and had Shaq protecting the rim on defense. Kobe Bryant was turning into a monster on offense while playing great defense on top of it. Bryant was really coming into his own on offense as he was becoming one of the best perimeter players in the league. They had a lot of good role player like “Big Shot” Robert Horry, Derek Fisher, Brian Shaw, Ron Harper, Horace Grant, and Rick Fox. This team had the most dominant player ever in Shaq, and Kobe and Shaq formed arguably the best duo ever in NBA history.

When you bring up this particular matchup to people people always ask who would Shaq guard when the Warriors throw out the Hampton’s five lineup of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, and Draymond Green. With the Warriors pick and roll offense Shaq would end up in some mismatches and the Warriors could take advantage of it. The problem is when the Warriors go to that Hampton’s five lineup who is supposed to be guarding Shaq. Durant and Green are are too small it would get them in foul trouble. They would have to throw all their big men in the game to foul Shaq because he was too dominant. The Laker role players played good at the right moments. Shaq always seemed to make the free throws when it counted. I personally believe the Shaq factor wins this fantasy series for them. What you think?
