Russell Westbrook is the NBA MVP.
The NBA Awards were handed out last night and as we watched everyone get their awards we all knew what we were waiting on.....the NBA to give out it's MVP award. All season everyone wondered who would get this award. There were arguments all season about who should win
James Harden or Russell Westbrook. Everyone had an opinion on it even people that weren't in to sports like that. Both of these players had incredible seasons and there was no wrong choice with either of these two. As you probably know now Russell Westbrook won the 2017 MVP award and he deserved it.
After the NBA awards show was over I went to social media outlets to see the reaction and how everyone felt. As usual people were congratulating him saying he should have won and everything. I was just so surprised to see the amount of dislike and the reasons for the dislike. You could get on a timeline on twitter and it would seem like Westbrook has committed crimes or did bad things in the community of Oklahoma City. People saying that he didn't play to win he played to just get triple doubles.
Russell Westbrook like myself grew up in the inner city of Los Angeles, California where he didn't have much and he lets you know that. To come from that to winning the NBA MVP is just amazing. Before the season most critics said that the Oklahoma City Thunder would not make the playoffs and they will be just an afterthought. Westbrook carried them to 47 wins and the 6th seed in the tough Western Conference. He carried this team to the 6th while averaging a triple double. Averaging a triple double was done one time in the NBA. Oscar Roberson averaged a triple double in the 1961-1962 season while he recorded 41 triple doubles. Westbrook became the second player in NBA history to achieve the feat while getting 42 triple doubles which is the new NBA record for a season.
For the 42 triple doubles he recorded the Thunder won 33 of them.
Westbrook also doesn't carry the Oklahoma City Thunder franchise on his back he carries the Oklahoma City community on his back. He's a big part of everything that goes around that city. We all know about Kevin Durant leaving and the impact it had not just on the team but on the community too. July 4th was the day Kevin Durant decided to leave for Golden State and it devastated the community. Around that same time Westbrook signed up for another year with the Thunder and the community rallied around him. He felt that and took them on a unbelievable ride through the season. Having the impact he has had through the community is amazing in itself because he takes pride of having the biggest impact he can all the time and I applaud him for it.
Maybe some people should stop looking at the aggressive attitude that he has and just look at everything he does for Oklahoma City........On and off the court.
